Lara Dutta: Mahesh indulges me

The wedding vows are over and Lara Dutta’s back to business. Filmfafe talks to the new bride with newer dreams

Inside Bhupati"s office, clad in a gangi and pajamas, sans make-up, Lara Dutta looks completely in charge. It's been six weeks since her marriage but there's none of the newly wed coyness in her demeanor. She claims nothing has changed after marriage.  "Mahesh has been busy playing his matches in Dubai, Miami and all over. And I’ve been busy finishing Don 2 and getting Chalo Delli (produced by her production house Bheegi Basanti Entertainment Pvt. Ltd) going,” she says adding.

The couple’s been staying in her Bandra apartment as of now and has plans to move into a bigger home. He’s moved his things but he’s never home, not even for 24 hours at a stretch. Only when Mahesh retires will we get to see each other every day,” laughs Lara. I understand his lifestyle and he knows mine. Eventually, Mahesh will slow down on the tennis circuit. Then we’ll be spending more time with each other
They had quite a fairytale wedding far away in picturesque Goa.

“I wanted it to be about friends and family. It was absolutely perfect and we had a great time the actress claims that they have a good balance in their relationship. The best thing is Mahesh indulges me. He allows me to have my way most of the time,” smiles Lara. The actress says that the couple is excited about parenthood.  “We’ve spoken about it but we don’t plan anything in life.

She denies she had any apprehensions about marrying a once-married Mahesh (he was earlier married to ex-model Shveta Jaishanker). “I haven’t got married at the age of 21. I have lived my life on my own terms. I’ve found a partner who complements me in many ways.

On the professional front, Lara is excited about her new role as producer. Given her quirky sense of humour, the title for her production house Bheegi Basanti was her brainchild. “Of course, it originated from the Basanti of Sholay (played by Hema Malini). She elaborates on her maiden production venture, Chalo Dilli. “The experience has been exciting, exhausting, entertaining and enlightening.

What made her turn producer? “So many times you’re offered scripts which you really want to do but they don’t find takers. If you keep waiting for people to make them you’d keep sitting for a long time. When director Shashank Shah didn’t find a producer I thought why not produce this film?” she explains. “I’m not trying to produce unconventional films. I know how the industry works. But there are wonderful stories that you can tell and they don’t have to be art house cinema.”

Where her acting career is concerned, Lara has worked with top stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. But her career graph as compared to that of her peers Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu hasn’t really peaked. “Everyone starts their career according to their own needs. My drive has been the love to perform. I'm blessed to have had the opportunity to act. I’m very selective about the people I work with. The girls you mentioned are brilliant. I have a lot of respect for both Priyanka and Bipasha for coming in from outside the industry and holding their own and doing well. It’s not an easy place to survive.” She adds, “I’m happy that I have a lot of respect in the industry and being a producer today I can approach any of the actors you’ve mentioned.

Where Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 is concerned a lot has been spoken about her glam look in the film. But how will it enhance career? “It’s a film I wanted to be a part of. Somewhere in my filmography it will remain that I was part of this wonderful franchise called Don!
