Yet to learn the finer nuances:Kalki Koechlin

Actress Kalki Koechlin is just four films old in Bollywood but says she doesn't want to restrict herself to a particular genre and is yet to learn the finer nuances of Hindi cinema.
The 28-year-old actress of French descent began her career playing a modern Chandramukhi in husband Anurag Kashyap's film 'Dev D'. After starring in films like 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' and 'Shaitan', she will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's comedy 'My Friend Pinto' opposite Prateik Babbar.

"I began my career with a bold character which generally an actor doesn't take up in her starting days. I enjoy acting and started taking Hindi classes to learn the diction.

"I always try to bring variety to my characters and do not want to restrict myself to any genre. Initially it is tough for me but to make a mark in the industry I have to learn various nuances," Kalki told PTI in an interview.

She feels comedy is spontaneous and had to struggle a lot to be subtle with it."Comedy is difficult because it is spontaneous and timing is an important part of it. It is easy to be over the top but it hard to be subtle in the comedy. That was the most challenging part.

"I play a character called Maggie. She is a wide-eyed innocent Catholic girl who wants to become a dancer. But her mother won't let her because she feels the industry is bad and she has to compromise a lot to get to the top. She meets Prateik and her life changes," the actress said.

Kalki had to watch the old classics in comedy to prepare herself for the character."The whole film is done in such a comical way as it used to be in the earlier years. The style of comedy is very like Charlie Chaplin and Raj Kapoor films. I also watched American comedy film 'Singing in the Rain'," she informed.

The actress, who recently tied the knot with Kashyap, feels marriage has not changed her life as her husband doesn't even help her better her Hindi."Marriage is just a commitment to each other and nothing else. Anurag is useless - he never helps me learn anything, not even Hindi. He always talks to me in English but I force him to talk in Hindi.

"I got married just four months ago and haven't received any good offers post marriage. Actually, I haven't done any film since I got married. The ones I did before marriage are releasing now," said the actress, who was in the national capital recently to walk the ramp for designer Rina Dhaka.

She was last seen in Kashyap's 'That Girl in Yellow Boots'. Asked if she will be seen again in any of his films, Kalki said, "Right now he's doing different kinds of films in which I am not interested. I am busy shooting Dibakar Banerjee's 'Shanghai'. But surely in the future I will be working with Anurag because we are together for the lifetime."
